Inland Wetlands & Watercourses & Aquifer Protection Agency

View of inland wetlands

The Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission in each municipality is responsible for reviewing applications for development that may impact a wetland or watercourse. The purpose of the Commission's regulations is to minimize or prevent disturbance and pollution of each town's inland wetlands and watercourses, including its bogs, swamps, and marshes, as well as its lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams.

Contact the office before undertaking any activity in or within 100 feet of a wetland or watercourse.

If you believe your activity is exempt from permitting, or may fall under an agricultural exemption, please contact the office. A "Determination of Permit Need" will be completed and reviewed by the Commission to determines if a permit is required. This form is listed below.

The Agent is authorized to approve minor activities within the upland review area where it has been determined that the project will not have a significant impact. This is called an "Authorized Agent Approval". These include sheds, garages, additions under 800 square feet, pools, septic system and well installations and repairs, minor grading, driveways, driveway expansions, and utility repairs. This form is listed below.
