Emergency Management

Local emergency management capabilities support the State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security's Response Framework in preparing for our communities' response to potential disasters.

Ray McGillivray is Canterbury's Emergency Management Director, or EMD.  He coordinates, along with the Board of Selectman, Public Works Department and Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, our Town's preparation for, and response to, potential natural and man-made disasters.

To support this effort, emergency generators have been installed at the Town shelter (Dr. Helen Baldwin Middle School), First Response Center (Fire Department) and Command and Operations Center (Town Hall Community Room). Emergency communications equipment has also been installed in the Community Center.

We are in the process of coordinating a number of training opportunities for citizens to become qualified in support of emergency management functions. Several Canterbury residents have graduated from CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training and will be helping to coordinate training in Canterbury.  The EMD will be planning training sessions in NIMS (National Incident Management Systems), which provides a framework for coordinating all of the various agencies involved in responding to emergencies.

Please visit CERT's website and NIMS for more details.

Anyone interested in helping in these efforts can contact the Canterbury Selectmen's Office.
